Callout

Mark a note, warning, or error inside the page flow.

Open Markdown

A callout separates a remark from the prose around it without taking the reader out of the page. It renders as an icon beside your Markdown, coloured by the kind of remark it is.

</Callout>

Rendered:

Cross-origin protection is on by default and returns 403 for browser-issued cross-origin writes.

The children are ordinary Markdown, so links, code, and lists all work inside one.

Vary: Accept fragments CDN caches. Normalize the header at the edge first.

A request that fails CSRF validation is rejected before your handler runs.

Attributes

AttributeRequiredDefaultMeaning
typenodefaultOne of default, info, warning, error. Written to data-type, which the stylesheet colours
emojinobuilt-in iconReplaces the icon with the text you pass

An unrecognized type falls back to default rather than dropping the callout, so a typo costs you the colour, not the content.

</Callout>

Accessibility

The container carries role="note", so assistive technology announces it as an aside rather than as body copy. The icon is aria-hidden, because it repeats what the type and the prose already say; a screen reader that announced it would read decoration.

That means the colour and the icon are never the only carrier of meaning. Write the callout so it still reads correctly in plain text, and the reader who cannot see the treatment loses nothing.

Use it sparingly

A page with four callouts has no callouts: the reader stops seeing them. If something is required to succeed, it belongs in the prose. Reserve callouts for the thing that is true but would break the sentence you are writing.
